中学校社会科・高校日本史の教員免許を持っています。
大学時代から、学習ボランティアや塾講師として教育に携わってきました。
現在は中学受験の塾で働いていて、講師歴は6年目になります。
大学受験の際には、部活動を引退した8月から勉強を始めて、偏差値20以上のUPを経験してるので、これからの方法に一応説得力はあるのかなと思います。
1.歴史のNGな勉強方法
ここでは３つのNGな方法を紹介します。
多くの人がやってしまっているけれども、効率が良くない方法です。
・語句のみを覚える
一問一答式の参考書を使ってる時に陥りやすい状況です。
例えば、「国風文化」という言葉は知っていても、それが「どういう意味なのか」、「何時代の話なのか」、「どんな特徴があるのか」
を分かっていないと実戦では意味がありません。
特に歴史では、その出来事や法律の時代背景がとても大切です。
そのためには、文章の空欄を埋めるタイプの参考者が有効です。
文章を何回も読んでいくことで、単語だけでなく意味や背景も覚えられるはずです。
一問一答形式の参考書の場合は、問題文もしっかりと読むことで解決できます。
・ひたすらノートにまとめる
これもテスト前の勉強でやっている人が多いのではないでしょうか。
ノートにまとめる事は有効な場合もありますが、教科書をそのままノートに写していく様なやり方では効率が悪いです。
ノートにまとめる際には、以下の点に注意してください。
- 自分の言葉で→教科書の言葉をそのまま写すのは効率が悪いです。自分の言葉に噛み砕いてまとめてください。
- テーマごとに整理して→通史(全部の時代を総合的にまとめた歴史)えお書くのではなく、テーマごとに整理してまとめる。
例)日本と中国の貿易、徳川吉宗がやったこと、など - 色は３色まで→３色に根拠があるわけではありませんが、見栄えを気にしすぎて、時間をかけてノートを作るのは目的から外れた行為です。色は出来るだけ少なく、シンプルにまとめてください。
これらを守ると、ノートにまとめるという勉強方法も一定の効果を発揮すると思います。
・アウトプットしていない
歴史は暗記教科というイメージが強いので、ひたすら参考書と向き合いながら暗記を頑張っている人がいます。
それは勉強方法としては、あまりオススメではありません。
学習効率を上げるためには、覚えた知識をどんどん使うことが大切です。
覚えきれていなくても、テストをしてみてください。
本番のテスト以外では、どれだけ間違えてもいいはずです。
ミスを恐れず、積極的にアウトプットしていきましょう。
2.オススメな勉強方法
これからは、オススメの勉強方法を紹介していきます。
どれも自分自身が意識しながら勉強してきて、成果も出ているものを厳選してます。
・流れを意識する
歴史には流れあります。
よく「歴史は物語のように覚える」「歴史はドラマのように覚える」と言われます。
これは、「歴史は流れを意識して、因果関係(原因と結果)を掴むことが重要だ」ということです。
例えば、次のような並べ替え問題があります。
①三国干渉
②日清戦争
③日比谷焼打事件
④日英同盟
正しく並べ替えることはできますか？
正解は、②→①→④→③です。
この問題は年号を知らなくても、”流れ”を意識して勉強していると簡単に解くことができます。
まず、①三国干渉とは②日清戦争で日本が得た領土を中国に返すように３国(ロシア、フランス、ドイツ)が圧力をかけてきた事件です。
つまり、②→①です。そしてこの事件によって、日本とロシアの関係は悪化し、日露戦争にまで発展していきます。
日本は単独でロシアと戦うのではなく、強力な味方を得てから日露戦争に向かいます。
その味方がイギリスです。つまり、③日英同盟です。
日本は③日英同盟を結び、日露戦争を必死で戦います。民衆は厳しい生活を強いられながら、なんとか有利な状況で戦争終了まで耐えていくのです。
ところが、日本とロシアの講和条約(ポーツマス条約)では、賠償金を得ることができなかったのです。
このことに民衆が怒り、暴動を起こします。これが③日比谷焼打事件です。
今回の説明には、年号などは一切出てきていません。
しかし、流れ(因果関係)を考えると、並び替え問題もスムーズに解けることがわかっていただけたと思います。
・イメーシを大切に
歴史を言葉だけで覚えるのは、あまり面白くありません。
そんな時は、写真や絵を見てイメージを作ってみてください。
例えば、板垣退助という人物を覚えたいときに、人物名だけ覚えても退屈ですよね。
そんな時はスマホやパソコンで板垣退助の写真を見てみましょう。資料流にも載っていると思います。
「髭の形に特徴あるな」とか、「シュッとしてるな」とかそんな感想を持ちながら覚えてみてください。
すると、印象に残るので覚えやすくなります。
写真だけではなく、歴史のドラマや漫画を読むことも、人物のイメージを広げてくれるのでオススメです。

・漢字や言葉の意味を意識する
歴史の暗記の難関の１つが漢字の暗記だと思います。
しかし、漢字の意味を考えながら暗記をすると、漢字も暗記を助けてくれるツールとなります。
例えば、廃藩置県という重要な政策があります。
これは、江戸時代にあった”藩”による支配を”廃止”して、各地に”県”を”置く”という政策です。
漢字と政策の意味が一致していて覚えやいと思います。
今回の例はあまりに簡単なので、もう１つ例をあげます。
墾田永年私財法です。漢字が難しいですが、意味を考えると覚えやすいと思います。
墾田＝墾という字は、荒地を耕すという意味です。墾田は、荒れた土地を田んぼにするという意味です。
永年＝これは字のままです。永久に、ずっとという意味です。
私財＝個人の財産という意味です。
法＝これは法律ということです。
つまり、新しく耕した田んぼは、ずっと個人の財産にして良いという法律になります。
漢字の意味を考えると、用語の意味が分かりやすくなることを理解していただけたかと思います。
・間違えやすい所は個別に暗記
勉強を進めていくと、どうしても混同してしまい間違えてしまう言葉があると思います。
それらはピックアップして個別に覚えていきます。
例えば、「最澄」が「天台宗」を開き、「空海」が「真言宗」を開きました。
この2人は混合しやすいポイントです。
このような場合には、どちらか1つに注目して覚えます。
今回は、「最澄」が「天台宗」に注目します。
両方の頭文字を取って、てんさい(天台宗→最澄)と覚えます。
片方が暗記できれば、もう片方も区別できるようになります。(念の為、真言宗→空海で”しんくう”です)
このように、混同しやすいものはピックアップして片方を覚えてしまえば大丈夫です。
語呂合わせなどは適当で大丈夫です。印象に残れば、記憶にも残りやすいのでそこまで深く考える必要はありません。
もう1つ例を挙げます。
”日ソ共同宣言”と”日中共同声明”です。
これらは、共同の後が「宣言」なのか「声明」なのかが覚えづらいです。
今回も1つに注目します。
日中共同声明に注目しましょう。
中国は昔、明(みん)という国名でした。
なので、日本と中国(日中)の後に続くのは、共同声”明”です。
いかがでしょうか。
これはあくまで、私の覚え方なのでオリジナルな覚え方を考えてみてください。
・アウトプットを多く
NGな勉強方法でも説明した通り、アウトプットは非常に重要です。
理由は以下の3つです。
- 人の記憶は使う(アウトプット)の時に定着するから。
- 間違えると、その問題が記憶に残るから。
- 抜けている部分と完璧な部分がわかり、効率良く暗記できるから。
以上の理由を見ても、勉強の際にアウトプットをしない理由がないと思います。
積極的に問題を解いていってください。
3.まとめ
優れた勉強方法には、共通点も多いです。
しかし、人それぞれ向いている勉強法があります。それと同じように教科によっても、向いている勉強方法は異なります。
